From all of us here at the archive:
Happy Australia Day!
The fashion choice for a lot of people today is traditionally either a t shirt or singlet, shorts and thongs. While I have the t shirt and shorts and will get them on today I don’t have the thongs. Oh well.
Relax, unwind and enjoy!
I had a job recently restoring some old Sydney radio recordings from someone who had a lot of quarter-inch reel to reel tapes – but instead of them being in half-track stereo (where the deck records across the entire width of the tape at once), these were quarter-track.
Being Ampex 407 where that, 456, 407 and 457 are the primary offenders of binder breakdown, where Ampex stopped using whale oil to make the tape binder due to whaling being banned in the 70′s and using a synthetic replacement, its this replacement that has affected over 1 million reels of tape, and engineers are finding old master tapes are not playing back without a fight. Over time, this binder breaks down and creates a mess all over the tape transport, taling the recorded material with it.
The cure is to bake the affected tapes (yes, like you would with a cake) in a convection oven for a few hours at no more than 50 to 60 degrees celsius. Because those binders act as moisture absorbers the idea is to drive the moisture out of the tape long enough to let you get a good transfer to another format. Playing these tapes without baking will cause a squealing sound from the tape which is a cue to stop playback immediately and preventing any damage to them.
Unfortunately, some of the stuff I’m currently dealing with is in such a state, that the oxide is literally peeling away from the tape surface as its being played – caused by someone before me playing the tapes without giving them the bake treatment first. Baking tape is by no means a permanent fix – the tape reverts back to its horrible state within a week or so.
I encountered one such tape just today – check out the pile of torn off oxide at the bottom of the tape deck!
Remaster guys, I beg you – please don’t play affected tapes without baking them first. You’ll risk permanent damage to the tape and if its a master, you’ve had it.
I wonder what’s so earth shattering with this morning’s horoscopes to make the top 5 read news stories by SMH Online…

**I’m not sure if this was all that was actually on this particular 7 Sydney closedown from ’84 as it seems to start with the last few seconds of the national anthem, then onto the 7 logo, followed by a test pattern indicating ATN7/46 and then the transmitter being shut down – presumably 46 was their UHF channel, but it still seems too short. On the tape it came from the ID above and this cut follow each other without any sign of a sudden drop-in to the tape.
Victoria Azarenker in the Australian Open earlier tonight signed her nane on a camera lens tonight..with a black marker pen! Wonder if that pen was a permanent marker…

Seems SBS is having a few problems tonight. SBS One’s programs came to a screeching halt around 11.20 tonight when frozen video made itself known – then the on air program stuttered until it finally crashed with a white screen going to air. Was back at 11.40 and froze again shortly afterwards before resuming. Possibly a corrupted program?

Recently I found a few audio cassette tapes and going through them to check their contents, I found a whole bunch of Stan Zemanek caller replay tracks. These were tracks Stan played featuring some of the crackpot callers who were on his show the previous night.
I remember recording as many as possible at the time and now that the cassettes had been found, I converted all the available tracks to MP3 format – of which there were 128 in total! I thought now it would be fun to place each track up here bit by bit.

It seems either no one could be bothered going in to do a show or someone said aaaah, we won ratings, we’ll just do something else on Christmas night!
…and so they did. Radio 2GB Sydney, a consistent radio ratings winner, has now been classified as a temporary music radio station! Since 7pm Christmas night, they’ve been running automated music, with newsbreaks at the top of the hour, every hour.
Meanwhile, 2UE on the other hand, who haven’t really won a survey for a while, are doing a LIVE talkback show! Bummer that its the non-ratings period because I would love to see the figures for tonight. 2UE seem to be it for live talkback tonight and kudos to them.
Give ‘em a listen! www.2ue.com.au, 954 AM and on DAB+.

Fans of Triple M’s “Get This” which was unceremoniously given the axe by the station a couple of years ago will love this audio piece. Get This was a hilarious program that rated double figures. The station then rated single figures after it got axed – gee, I wonder why…
At the helm of Get This was one of the country’s most talented producers and panel operators, Richard Marsland. I loved Richard’s work, and how he pulled it all together every day for the show amazed me and his work was just amazing – had everything lined up and bang bang bang bang bang, one after the other, all the bits ‘n’ pieces were cued up and fired just like that, with absolute precision. He was certainly a master craftsman.
I was in touch with a guy by the name of Matt Fulton, a great guy who always had time for you and would give you a hand here and there if you ever required it. Unfortunately I haven’t spoken to him in a couple of years. I felt pretty strongly about Michael Jackson’s death and some of the stuff he said about it really irked me so I let the friendship go – but he was a great bloke. It was through him I learnt that Richard had taken his own life 3 years ago this date.
This tribute, however short, certainly had me laughing, and it was just one piece of production I was in awe of and still am. Here I present Richard, doing his best Keith Urban at the end, singing the Vengaboys song, The Vengabus.
Audio Credit: Triple M Melbourne and all associated with Get This at the time – Tony Martin, Ed Kavalee, Matty D on the pots ‘n’ pans, and last but certainly not least, Richard Marsland.
