May you all rest in peace. I can’t believe we’ve also lost Robin Gibb, succumbing to cancer at 62. Donna Summer also lost her battle with cancer, as did Peter Jones.

Bastard cancer. It also claimed my uncle at age 90 on January 6th this year.

Thankyou all who asked about my dad. He’s back home now and has an oxygen machine he needs to be on for 16 hours a day for the next month, some prednisone and other stuff to take. But certainly much better than a week ago where he was very red in the face for ages and whose blood pressure was 205 over 105.

…and continuing 2SM’s 1977 special Nostradamus I, here’s reel 2 – the next update will carry 3XY’s version, recorded a year later, and also originating on two reels.

2SM Sydney: Nostradamus I 1977 – Reel 2
Narrated by John Torv with track introductions by Paul Turner, 3XY Melbourne
1/4″ 7.5 IPS Mono, no reference tones

Reel 2 Part 1: What The World Needs Now – 3.6 MB, Duration: 7’44″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Reel 2 Part 2: Armstrong – 1.9 MB, Duration: 4’12″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Reel 2 Part 3: Eve Of Destruction – 5.3 MB, Duration: 11’20″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

**The tape box had this track listed as “Eye of Destruction” instead. I’m sure they meant “Eve”…”Ohhhh I don’t believe…we’re on the eye of destruction” doesn’t quite sound right to me…also at 2:55 the level suddenly jumps up. It wasn’t me, folks!

Reel 2 Part 4: In The Year 2525 – 2.7 MB, Duration: 5’51″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

**More haphazard editing on this segment with the ending suddenly dropping off. I know the RCA valve desks had a nasty habit of chopping the signal off entirely in the last quarter or so of fader travel but I’m sure an RME was in use at 2SM at this time.

Reel 2 Part 5: Ballad Of Nostradamus – 3.3 MB, Duration: 7’03″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The two 1/4" master reels that make up 2SM Sydney's 1977 special, Nostradamus 1.

A special presentation for you this time around – 2SM Sydney’s Nostradamus I special from 1977. This came in the form of two 1/4″ open reel tapes with white leader tape in-between segments, and like all mastering tape from this era, they had to be given the bake method before playing.

2SM Sydney: Nostradamus I 1977 – Reel 1
Narrated by John Torv with track introductions by Paul Turner, 3XY Melbourne
1/4″ 7.5 IPS Mono, no reference tones

Reel 1 Part 1: Fire – 4.0 MB, Duration: 8’34″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Reel 1 Part 2: Revolution – 2.4 MB, Duration: 5’16″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

**A drop occurs around 1:22 in this cut – upon examining the tape I found a splice, not a very good one but it’s there. Presumably either during rewind or fast forward the tape had fallen apart as there’s a section missing.

Reel 1 Part 3: Impossible Dream – 2.7 MB, Duration: 5’54″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Reel 1 Part 4: War – 3.8 MB, Duration: 8’10″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Reel 1 Part 5: Universal Soldier – 2.2 MB, Duration: 4’49″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Reel 1 Part 6: A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall – 2.6 MB, Duration: 5’36″

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

**From 4:14 you’ll hear the effect of a damaged tape. It seems someone else tried to play it before baking and before it got to me, and by doing so they have literally peeled the oxide away from the tape surface! You’ll hear it as a drop every 2 seconds, coinciding with every turn of the supply reel and rapidly disintegrating as it gets towards the end of the segment and the reel itself.

Next update: Reel 2

First up, it’s mother’s day! Happy mother’s day to you if you’re a mum and hope the kids did the right thing by you! Unfortunately not so good this end – my dad’s been taken to hospital. He’s having problems with COPD that he’s had since 2005. At time of writing he’s hooked up to machines as he’s still having trouble breathing – but at 9am this morning before he got there he had a blood pressure of…wait for it..

205 over 105.

He’s 82 years old, and the unfortunate part about this is that he also has had a backache and scans revealed he has what they’re calling T6 and T9 compression fractures – so he was being treated for that with some meds, but we don’t know if those meds somehow interacted with the meds he’s been taking for COPD. In any case he’s now breathing with an assistance from a machine – he’s struggling to breathe on his own right now.

To take my mind off this awful situation I’ve compiled a video update. Enjoy this, and hopefully by next update I’ll have some good news for you regarding my dad.

It's ME/CFS Awareness Day. Please spare a thought for those who have this horrible disease. My lady friend has it and has had it for 17 years with no hope of a cure. Please keep her in your thoughts today.

2GB Sydney are at it again. Now another long serving bloke there has been given the arse. Luke Bona.

Luke is another brilliant broadcaster and you can certainly tell what a great guy he is off the air too. The timing couldn’t have been any worse – it happened right on his birthday.

Luke, I hope somewhere else recognises all the hard work you put in over the years and often at a moment’s notice. Hang in there and remember the old saying – one door closes, and another one opens.

Its still a crap act to be turfing people that have been at 2GB for years though. What now, another mtr contract to fill out is it? Start changing stuff and the listeners will simply go elsewhere – I’ve been in both sides of the radio and straight up, listeners just do NOT like change, and especially not sudden ones.

I first heard about it on a radio forum but it was unconfirmed..then confirmed moments later, and then I saw reference to it on Twitter.

As is often said, these things tend to come in threes. Who the hell is next…

2UE’s brekky show with Jason carried an interesting piece this morning that in the UK, the term Blacklist is considered racist towards black people. So they’re pushing for it to be changed to Greenlist or Redlist.

Greenlist is my favourite because I bet they never asked Kermit The Frog if thats racist towards frogs ;-)

Heh heh heh…

Downtime

Sorry about the downtime today folks! It was out of our control this time around, unfortunately all of Zanyspace was affected and we were offline for most of the day. Kudos to Glen who got us and the rest back online just after 9pm.

Happy weekend everyone!

2GB Sydney

Is someone trying to sabotage 2GB Sydney or is it really a case of failing equipment?

In the last few weeks, radio 2GB have had a couple of transmitter problems – nothing new for a 24/7 service, you’d have to expect some downtime sometime – but the fact it keeps happening and often with monotonous regularity has got me baffled, and probably baffling the techs as well.

Last night during Steve Price’s show it happened again. Both the 873 AM transmitter at Homebush Bay/Wentworth Point, and the digital radio transmitter at Artarmon were on and off, the digital signal continuing to have problems through Mike Williams’s overnight show – which was quite odd as its very rare for both to go down at once seeing they’re in seperate locations. So I could only guess it was at the studio end.

What is going on? What piece of gear is failing so badly that it affects the on air signal on both transmitters and why is it still in service? …and while we’re here, why no aviation lights on the 873 tower? It’s pitch black at night out there and you can’t see it unless the lights are on. Or they ARE on the tower and either not switched on or have bulbs that haven’t been replaced in ages…

Beats the shit outta me…

**These ads crack me up!! For the record, the guy’s name is Tommy Dysart – same guy from the Yellow Pages Goggomobile ads and in later episodes of Prisoner Cell Block H. Love the “bevare of cheap imitatings” too.

Hope you guys are all enjoying the Stan Zemanek 1999 caller replay tracks as here are the next few tracks of this wonderful series. 13 tracks to go and those will be included in the next Stan update – in the meantime, enjoy these! (and yes, there is a bit of fluttering near the end of some of these…a combination of old cassette tapes and less than ideal recording conditions at the time).

Producers…please

Little message for the producers/engineers of the latest BUPA radio spots.

THEY ARE TOO BLOODY LOUD!!!!

One version has bells in it which absolutely blow your ears off if you’re listening on digital radio with headphones. Producers, time to do some serious optimizing. Back off on the compression and EQ those damn bells. Geesh they were loud…

(and women screaming in radio ads also piss me off..WHY?? It’s LOUD!!! Geddit??)

**Since I wrote this post, Sam over at Samuel’s Blog has written a great piece about all these changes. Head on over there for his take.

Folks,

You may have heard of a couple of changes affecting Sydney’s two main talkback radio stations, 2UE and 2GB. This is the tally board so far:

* Brian Wilshire: Definitely leaving for 3 months to write his latest book. Could be code for he isn’t coming back. The fact he’s going, to make way for someone else is irritating. Anyway, from monday april 30th, 8pm – midnight it’s Steve Price. This means the Alan Jones and Ray Hadley highlights are gone too from 8pm to 9pm. Maybe. Steve starting at 9pm? Not likely, because:
* David Oldfield moves to nights on 2UE, *also* from 8pm – midnight. Right up against Steve Price.
* Mike Jeffries last show tonight. There was talk that he was moving back to middawns, but now that doesn’t seem quite right as Mike mentioned he will be taking 2 weeks off to consider things.
* A vacant morning slot now means Stuart Bocking will be taking over the 9am – Midday slot. Welcome back Stu!!

…and the piece de resistance…

The brains trust at Sydney’s 95.3 have decided their latest attempt at a format hasn’t gone too well either. It’s been scrapped (again). Now expect positioner’s and idents to tell you it’s called…wait for it:

“Smooth 95.3″

Oh dear…anyway, it’ll be a very interesting survey period with even more interesting results. Watch this space!

Songs stuck to my head

Ever had a song continually go round and round in your head? Today from me its one of mondo rock’s.

All morning its “boom baby boom!” in my head!

Sleep deprivation? ;-)

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest we forget.”

It’s ANZAC Day 2012. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing today, take a moment to think of those brave people who went to war, of those who continue to, and of those who sadly, never made it home. I’ll never forget going to AFTRS in 2005 and being played a snippet of a guy who told in detail that as he and many others were walking around, he heard a click and thought he’d stepped on something and froze. The sadness that went through me when he then told that the cracking noise was him literally walking over his fallen friend – the clicking being from his ribs – he was open chested lying there – was unbelievable. I felt so sorry for him as he broke down while telling the story.

We have prepared a compile audio track for you to commemorate this day, and it’s my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Matt from Wireless Fodder who sent me a bunch of stuff years ago which also contained some 2005 ANZAC Day stuff and also to Radio WS-FM Sydney for its reproduction. As a result this audio is being promoted as being “ANZAC Day 2005″ but whether it’s 2005 or 2012, it’s still ANZAC Day – therefore it’s that audio I share with you now. The backing track in the grabs is James Blundell’s “Postcards From Saigon”.

**Must thank James Paterson of the Australian Television Archive at this point – he undertook the transfer of the betamax tapes involved in this and the previous update when I was just starting out collecting old videotapes for material and at that point I didn’t have a betamax machine, so he helped out with the transfers. Lost a bit of quality as it was betamax—–>VHS——->DVD but its not too bad. You could probably get better quality versions of these cuts at his website or on Youtube.

Any dream interpreters/analysts in the audience? This one’s for you!

I’m in the middle of the city with a friend (female) and we start singing Prince’s track, “little red corvette”. Shortly after we’re joined by 10 people, then 20, then 50, and as the song continues we’ve got 1,000 all singing the same thing. I then woke up and caught myself mouthing the words to the song!

What the hell…?

Is it just me? As well as Brian Wilshire, now another favourite of mine has been unceremoniously dumped.

Trevor Sinclair, who most of you know from 2UW and recently Vega 95.3, has now been dumped from his drive show on 2CH!

I can’t believe this! Macquarie probably trying to recoup MTR losses? Yup..whether they are or not the last 2 decisions stink just the same. I’m sorry but they do.

So with that also came last night’s announcement that Mike Williams will be doing the 1am to 3.30am this week – Michael Mclaren’s gig.

What the HELL is going on??

Another Frankstermix!

Well..sort of. About a month ago I posted my mix of Queen’s “One Vision” after finding the multitrack stems online. I went back and experimented with it tonight and thought I’d put this version up – this is just the rhythm track, that is, drums only. Quite an experience and one I hope you’ll find interesting!

Earlier today we heard Dick Clark passed away at 82 after a heart attack, and news has broken in the last few minutes of Greg Ham’s passing – Greg was the flautist in Men At Work.

I find it particularly concerning about Greg Ham that the report says police had established a crime scene.

RIP Greg and Dick.

2GB just broadcast an ad for bing lee who are advertising a samsung computer carrying 8 meg ram. Surely its 8 gig? My first computer in 1994 had 4 meg. Either bing’s are going backwards or the gb copy guys need a bum kicking…

2GB’s Brian Wilshire

Wha…? Am I hearing things or is this story true?

2GB’s weeknight host Brian Wilshire is being pushed aside for Steve Price?? With Brian being bumped to middawns? Where does that leave Michael Mclaren then?

Consistently number one at nights, and they wanna push him aside? Unless Brian wants to leave that slot?

Standby folks..the radio landscape in Sydney is about to change yet again.

Well maybe not quite the band but it was definitely 45 years ago today – the first open line/talkback call went to air on 2UE here in Sydney. Its been actually open for debate with Mike Walsh mentioned but 2UE soon straightened that out.

Jason Morrison’s brekky show carried an awesome bit of audio of that first call and I gotta say congrats to them for finding it! So often there are stories of broadcast archival material no longer in existence or destroyed or even just damaged beyond repair – so to hear that audio this morning was fantastic, as someone like me who has been trying to save stuff wherever possible this restored my faith in it all. But if you’re gonna attempt restoration yourself please be aware you can just as easily damage it beyond repair. Ampex mastering tape is the prime offender – 406, 456, 407 and 457 are the worst cases, as is 478 and some of the Scotch series…226, 227 and others. These have a backcoating which has acted as a moisture absorber and breaks down during playback, taking your recordings with it. A temporary cure is to bake these tapes (yes, as in baking a cake) for a certain amount of time – doing this drives the moisture out long enough for you to transfer the contents to another format. There are also tapes which do not have backcoating such as the Scotch 177 series – these are just dry, the silicone lubricant having worn off. Cure for these is to actually relubricate the whole roll.

To that end folks, I reiterate – if you have something, anything that relates to radio or tv in some way, particularly in recorded form, please don’t chuck it. You may be throwing away the only copy in existence, and as so much historical audio and video is missing at various networks, you might just be holding the missing pieces to the jigsaw.

“Technical glitch reveals winner

TONIGHT, the name of the gold Logie winner was inadvertently and momentarily made available via Google prior to the winner being announced at the event in Melbourne.

The error occurred during live testing of the Herald Sun’s new iPad application which is due for release in coming weeks.

Live testing has been taking place for about a week.

At no time did the Herald Sun publish the name of the winner on its website, iPad app or in Twitter.

However, during the live testing, a link to an embargoed story naming the winner was momentarily created and published by Google.

The link was discovered almost as soon as it had been created and immediately killed.

The only media outlet to knowingly publish the winner’s name prior to it being announced was ninemsn.com.au – the website of the host broadcaster.”
