Trying to source a radio ad – can anyone help?

by admin on Jun.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

Australian radio folks, particularly those in traffic, I need your help. Trying to source a radio spot for Allianz Insurance which has a guy in a chinese accent starting his spiel with “Teenager don’t want tape deck with a headphone, they want boombox for shoulder”. I can’t find it *anywhere*. If you can, get in touch. Thanks!! Probably last on air in 2007, not sure.

Homebush Bay sojourn

by admin on Jun.28, 2010, under Uncategorized

Last thursday I felt like I wanted a day out of stuff – that meant everything, including giving up doing audio for the day. I felt like for a while I was becoming a slave AND a bit of a hermit, so where else to go for a radio techy nut like me? Yes folks, Homebush Bay in Sydney, home of not only the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games but also home to five Sydney AM radio transmitter towers!

These towers seem to be scattered all around the site, and after checking things out against google earth and the info of where each transmitter was located from ACMA publications, I set out with iPhone in tow (with trusty 3 megapixel camera on board) wanting to get a few photos.

It’s a bit of a hike and so far I got the equivalent of one photo but I was amazed at its quality and I thought I should share it with you. The tower in this photo is situated not far from 15 Hill Rd down there and belongs to 2KY/Sky Sports Radio. I had my AM walkman with me tuned to 2GB and as I got closer to this tx, all I could hear was Sky Sports Radio – no matter where I tuned on the AM band. Gotta love that splatter!

Next trek will be to go out there again and get photos of the shared 2UE/2SM transmitter tower which is probably a kilometre or so away from 2KY/Sky Sports Radio’s one. Then from there to continue in that direction and take Burroway Rd and head as close as possible to Wentworth Point, which houses the radio 2GB transmitter tower. Unfortunately there’s either a construction site or something involving trucks behind fences there and I doubt I’m gonna be able to get up close to it for a good photo but I’ll do what I can.

I’ve often wondered about writing to Broadcast Australia/TX Australia and mention I’m right into all this stuff and would love to see the equipment that’s housed in a transmitter hut. Viewing and taking photos of the tower is one thing, but it would be awesome to gain permission to enter a hut and get some photos. Anyway, here’s 2KY’s tower in all its glory.

Adriana Xenides dies

by admin on Jun.07, 2010, under Uncategorized

NO!!! :-(

Adriana Xenides has passed away. I first heard about on 2GB during Jason Morrison’s show, and then googled it where some on twitter are posting about it. 2GB then followed it up with a story on the 6pm news bulletin.

Damnit…she was one of my favourites. RIP Adriana.

Also RIP to the security guard who was shot this morning in Sydney’s CBD while guarding a cash pickup/delivery truck. Absolute bastards. Guy goes to work, and never returns home because of some absolute lunatic.

***Following post rated MA 15+ – Contains coarse language***

G’day folks,

I just HAD to let you in on this one. Thanks to the guys and gals of the Facebook group “Overheard in the control room…”.

Zimbabwean television continuity announcer proudly declared one night on air: “…and now, we are going to see the fuck up”. On the screen however were the words “F.A.Cup“. (read by announcer as FA Cup, sounding then like fuck up).

HAHAHA! I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time!

My remix of Elton John’s “Kiss the bride”

by admin on May.03, 2010, under Uncategorized

G’day wordpressers,

It’s a little known fact that sometimes I enjoy sitting in front of the computer and spending a couple of hours making my own remixes of songs. Because of various laws in place they’re not quite for distribution, but more for personal listening purposes.

However, I’m getting sick of making all these wonderful remixes, and not having an outlet to put them onto for fear of being shut down. So tonight, come what may.

To that end, I’d love you to take a listen to this – this was edited and remixed in under an hour, and it’s my version of Elton John’s “Kiss the bride”. Many and varied edits in this, but I had a ball cutting it together, and I hope you’ll have just as much fun listening to it.

Oh if I only I could afford the appropriate licences…*sighs*…

The Frankster Tapes: May 6th and 10th 1997

by admin on Apr.30, 2010, under Uncategorized

G’day WordPressers,

Before podcasting, I used to pick up a portable tape deck and just talk about nothing into it. I did it fairly regularly too and amassed a few tapes of me just talking about different things.

So out of the Frankster vault comes this gem I recorded on May 6th and May 10th, 1997 – edited, and “sanitised for your protection”.

2DAY-FM Sydney and Geoff Field

by admin on Apr.12, 2010, under Uncategorized

OK, so over the weekend we learned Geoff Field, newsreader for 2DAY-FM Sydney’s Kyle & Jackie O Show had decided to pack it in. Fair enough. But depending on who you read, we now have two conflicting stories.

Over here we have The Daily Telegraph, claiming Geoff has gone to Nova 96.9.

Over here we have the radio industry site, Radioinfo, claiming Geoff is now with the Hamish ‘n’ Andy team.

Confused? Yup, so am I…

Foxtel IQ – really bizarre problem

by admin on Apr.07, 2010, under Uncategorized

G’day WordPressers,

Would be interested if anyone in Sydney, or indeed in Australia who currently still has Foxtel IQ1, is having the exact same issues as I am the last few days. Just curious if it’s just my box failing or if it’s a problem right through the network.

Problem 1

Programs set for a 3.30 am recording time continually fail with an Error Code 40. Googled and came up with the fact that Fox may be doing early morning upgrades/updates. OK cool. But this has happened 3 nights now.

Problem 2

Program set for 7.30 pm recording time this evening brought up a “Clashed” error on the IQ’s planner. No other programs were set to record at 7.30pm. Only could come to one guess and that’s the fact the live pause/instant rewind feature is switched on still – but even so, that and the 7.30pm recording would make 2 programs which IQ can or is supposed to do.

Problem 2 in particular is the most bizarre thing I’ve seen happen on the IQ. How can it possibly clash when it’s the only program being recorded at that time? Nuts.

Radio 2UW Classic Audio update – Wednesday April 7th 2010

by admin on Apr.07, 2010, under Uncategorized

**All audio available from 7.00pm AEST Wednesday April 7th 2010

Yup, kind of a new section for the blog for us but finally I can keep the regular AV updates and the 2UW audio seperate from each other. So here we are! Enjoy!

So how did I get access to some of 2UW’s master reels? Well the answer is simple. I was audio guy for my local community radio station and in 2003, they were due to celebrate their 20th birthday. I went looking for any old audio that still may have been in existence as I was compiling a couple of specials for broadcast. The tape library didn’t reveal much, but a few days later I got wind of a storage area they had that was gonna be closed down to save costs. I thought to myself maybe the old stuff is down there. So on a saturday morning, I went down there with our technical co-ordinator and found what I was looking for – but not only that. Peeking behind a shelf were an absolute stack of 7-inch 1/4″ reels. I picked up a couple up being curious as to how we inherited such a large stack of audio tape – and found 2UW markings on the boxes! I’d heard some horror stories about historical audio and video being literally chucked out and I thought 2UW stuff is just too important to let them chuck it all, so I took every single one home, cleaned them all up and transferred the entire lot to CD. It took about a year to go through it all as every tape was on that horrendous batch of Ampex mastering tape (albeit a few on Scotch 177) and each one had to be baked so that it could be played. But at the end of 2003, there I was with fresh transfers of what was on the tapes, and after a few attempts I can now present the contents of them to you! You will be hearing the audio as it sounds on the original tapes. That also means if something was recorded only on one channel, that’s how you’ll hear it – redoing and remixing to correct the faults would only be rewriting history and I want the audio to be a replica of how it sounds on the tapes – so this is how you’re getting them here. Recording dates were usually supplied on the tape log sheets in the boxes but some had no log sheets and a bit of guesswork is involved. If you know when certain audio pieces you see up here were recorded, drop us a line so the information can be updated.

Copyright to this material presumably now remains with Mix 106.5 and the Australian Radio Network as when these tapes were made they were 2UW and owned by CBC, but no claim has been made for these audio pieces and it’s a bit up in the air as to their ownership. Therefore this material is being made available for listening/entertainment purposes only. Then again we’re talking the same people who when 2WS went to FM and got taken over by ARN ended up trashing lots of stuff – proof in the pudding being when I put up the 2WS AM to FM 1993 changeover audio aircheck I had and was asked through an intermediary if I could supply ARN with a dub of it…

Update to last night’s post

by admin on Apr.07, 2010, under Uncategorized

G’day WordPressers,

Thanks to Trev who left a comment about his technology show on 2GB – it seems its staying and both him and Ross Greenwood are a double act from this thursday! So if you’re into technology like I am, check it out 7pm thursdays, or trundle along to the 2GB site and listen to it through there or grab the podcast.

I’ve got to credit some wonderful people for the following news though too – Danny J Palmer, Tim Stackpool, Martin Lester and Alan Waddell

Further to last night’s post about NITV closing up on June 30th 2010, it seems ALL 4x series channels on digital TV are being given the heave-ho by the federal government. It was a trial service which will now be canned, and that entire spectrum cleared for community TV stations and the like. So you’ll have to do a rescan on your digiboxes shortly folks to pick up all the changes. Apparently NITV is also disappearing from C1 Aurora so there you go.

EXPO channel is one of those affected, Tim being the voiceover guy for that channel, however it will continue on Foxtel so his VO job is safe for now. That will also mean Parliament on 47 and 48 will disappear - either a move by them to stop us watching and seeing what’s being discussed, or cleared because A-PAC on Foxtel 607 is doing the same thing with better quality vision and sound.

On top of this, 3MTR, Melbourne’s new talk station will be launching on April 19th at 6.00am (thanks to 2GB’s Ray Hadley program for this info broadcast this morning), and it now is official – the prodigal son will be returning to 2GB overnights! (Jim Ball). Some of 2GB’s talk programs are also being networked into Melbourne – I’m not sure how state issues for Sydney would go down in Melbourne but its an interesting move anyway.

Server reset delayed due to flu

by admin on Apr.06, 2010, under Uncategorized

G’day folks,

The planned server reset for yesterday morning didn’t quite take place as I got hit with a bout of the flu, effectively ruining my easter. The stuff is still there if you want it for a few more days.

Media Bits ‘n’ Pieces

So, what’s with 2GB’s Chris Smith “cryptic” message he left us with as to why he won’t be on air tomorrow? Luke Bona will be taking his place. Apparently Chris said he can’t mention too much. Will be interesting if anything comes out of that bunker in the next couple of days. It’s probably all very innocent but there’s been lots of chopping and changing of the program line-up there recently. I just hope some dillweed doesn’t see fit to give Jason Morrison the arse, and I know I sound like a fanboi but Jason really does a great program and is a really down to earth guy – so it would be a bummer if he were to lose drive.

2GB’s Ross Greenwood now has a 2 hour show which runs from 6pm to 8pm, which (a) removes Glenn Wheeler/Warren Moore who used to do 7 to 8pm, and (b) will also remove Trevor Long’s technology show which goes to air at 7pm on thursday nights – if this 2 hour change is permanent. If it is, Trevor now no longer has a show, and while we’re on axing’s, David Oldfield has recently got the heave-ho from his midnight to dawn shift. About the same time, Jim Ball, who was hosting 2UE’s midnight to dawn shift had abruptly resigned. Currently doing 2UE’s overnight program is Mike Jeffries, a permanent gig – I used to listen to Mike years ago on 2GB drive! Welcome home Mike.

Has Jim Ball or will he return to 2GB overnights? It’s currently been done by Mike Williams. At least he was last week.

Interesting turn of events in broadcast radio? You bet!

While we’re at it, it would seem we have our second digital TV casualty in as many months. First Channel 45 where traffic cams and the like were broadcast went into scrap. Now it seems NITV (National Indigenous TV) on channel 40 will next be thrown into scrap – the message on their website reads that apparently according to no support from the government, NITV will be forced to close its doors at midnight on June 30th. As such they’ve started a “Save NITV” initiative. While I don’t watch it much this does NOT prosper well for the growth of digital television – if they do shut down, that will be two stations thrown away and still we’re 3 years away from the analogue shutdown. By the time we get to 2013 there’ll be no stations left if this keeps going apart from the majors.

Hanging out for a fresh AV update? So are we! As mentioned elsewhere on this site, best you grab the RSS feed and add it to your feedreaders as there’s no schedule in place for updates. New AV update being done up as I speak.

Busy time at the Frankster house

by admin on Feb.23, 2010, under Uncategorized

Well g’day folks,

It has been a seriously busy time at the house of Frankster the last week and a bit, which explains my disappearance from the site.

The last couple of weeks, my two cousins from Italy (Sylvia and Jenny) came for a visit and it was really cool! They had a ball and so did we, we and the rest of the clan took them all over Sydney and surrounds and they absolutely loved it. Last wednesday they flew back out to Italy after their two week sojourn.

The same day they flew out, my dad went into hospital for a cataract operation – I’m happy to say he came through it with flying colours and is now recovering. He’s just rapt, can see everything very clearly and just loves life again. Amazing what something like that can do!

On the social side I visited a mate on friday night and he invited one of his mates over and we sat down and watch some rugby union on Fox Sports 3, then a DVD of Tonight Live Revisited (Steve Vizard) – absolutely hilarious if you’re into that sort of humour!

Dad’s cataract operation meant he had to rest for a few days, so saturday morning I took the groceries helm. Did that, came back early afternoon and went out for a bit of lunch with my sister and a drive, then came back – and this is where the bulk of my “busyness” went for 3 days.

Sis booted up her PC as usual (Acer system running Windows Vista Home Basic [yes, licenced]) and once Windows started, she lost access to both the keyboard and the mouse. Rebooted several times, it didn’t fix it.

More trying followed, continuing on for an hour afterwards when the clock made its way towards 6pm. Sis and I were planning on going to the local club and having a spin of the pokies for a while – so we did that and got back home about 9pm, where the PC work continued. No matter what I did I just could not get it to respond – one final reboot before bed (at that point 2.50 am Sunday morning) then displayed boot error. I reasoned something went wrong and the hard drive was now blank or something else weird was going on.

Sunday morning at 11am I get up and try again, remembering there was a complete backup of the whole drive on a seperate hard drive. This unfortunately didn’t get it going either. Off we went in search of the Acer product recovery discs we made when we got the computer home in late 2008. Could not find recovery discs, we were stuck.

A phone call followed to Geeks To You, a mobile computer repair service. They couldn’t do anything either when Monday came around. I then called Acer hardware support who were very sympathetic to it all and for $163 we could send the PC back to them and they would reload Windows, do the recovery etc etc. Fantastic. They send an Australia Post eParcel label to put on the box and advised to take it down to the post office to send, at no postage cost to us. (presumably included in the $163 quoted above). Computer is now with Acer or maybe tomorrow they’ll receive it where they’ll load things again and ship it back. Good.

Then after that it was time for dinner, and a recording/demo session for a mate from 2RDJ where I used to work. This happened at 7pm with a mutual friend of ours arriving to oversee everything and offer some input as to how it should be sounding. Great catchup too. Finished at 10.30pm, then straight to bed as I had to be up early the next morning.

Today comes and we get word Sis’s new workplace is ready and we move in, unpack, and it’s then up to me to connect the computers, fax, phone etc up. Find that due to the fact the phone lines were dormant it neccessitated a visit from Telstra to make them active again while keeping the same number. Fine. Place has several other business branching off the one block and phone system. Cool. Telstra guy arrives and proceeds to work making our phone connections alive. Connections are finished and all is fine – until he leaves. Voice line and eftpos work, internet and fax doesn’t. Trouble. Voice and internet (ADSL) are connected by means of a filter – voice side of the line works, ADSL part doesn’t. Possible the new connection was only provisioned for voice and not voice/data? Very weird. Try the fax line. Dialling into it makes the fax ring once, then it diverts twice – first to a recording saying “this number is not connected”, then seconds later to a voice in her best chinese accent saying hello. Uh oh. Guy from business just adjacent to Sis’s work comes running in and saying his fax works but his voice line is out. Oh my gosh..what has the telstra guy done??

Get onto Telstra – guy on line says he will send a text to our phone confirming a visit this afternoon. Text never arrives after 70 minutes. Another call made. This time told by them nah, can’t make it, it’ll have to be tomorrow. “What time tomorrow?” “Uh, don’t know”. Great…

The saga continues…’til then, another early start tomorrow, then thursday and friday off along with the weekend. Let’s hope Telstra get their act together and fix up everything properly this time. I’m stumped though.

Voice line has ADSL filter, voice works but ADSL doesn’t – as I said, possible it was provisioned for voice and not voice/data? This line however has a working Eftpos connection as well via the use of a third connection (which is probably an extension point of the fax line, I don’t know – the old place, the fax and eftpos line were together – when the eftpos was in use the fax would be offline). Weird (again).

I know, you’re due an AV update – it’s coming, bear with me, it’s been very busy recently.

Vale Doug Fieger

by admin on Feb.15, 2010, under Uncategorized

Well all I can say is – what a bummer.

Doug Fieger of The Knack succumbs to cancer

Bloody cancer once again. RIP Doug, thanks for the music. Their huge hit “My Sharona” is still getting an absolute hammering on some classic hits radio stations but what about the rest of it? They had more than just that…

Anyway be that as it may, this song always takes me back to Club Veg’s version which was retitled “My Computer”. One hilarious verse was:

“Maybe I am dumb…but I’ve come…to the point where I say shove your pentium…up your bum…ha ha ha, die, computer…”
