    G’day WordPressers,

Before podcasting, I used to pick up a portable tape deck and just talk about nothing into it. I did it fairly regularly too and amassed a few tapes of me just talking about different things.

So out of the Frankster vault comes this gem I recorded on May 6th and May 10th, 1997 – edited, and “sanitised for your protection”.

    G’day WordPressers,

A mega HUGE thankyou to both Alan and Wazza for the clip below – this is a medley of jingles from 3XY’s “XY Zoo” days! Yay! They’ve been found at last.

    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

    Lest we forget.

The David Oldfield switcheroo is confirmed

    (Credit: Samuel’s Blog

Sam’s blog is carrying an interesting story this morning about ex-2GB’s David Oldfield. He seems to have joined the 2UE bunker! Apparently, David will be filling in for The Two Murrays from May 3rd to May 7th, and then for two weeks commencing May 10th for Stuart Bocking.

This is really interesting – and what makes it so is that on the eve of this happening, 2UE’s program director, Greg Byrnes, has resigned to take up a senior role over at Sky News. Is it just coincidence the program director resigns just as someone comes over from 2GB to do fill-in’s, and losing the prodigal son back to 2GB (Jim Ball)?

Poor Jim has gotten so used to saying 2UE’s number of 13 13 32 that it crossed 2GB a few times since he’s been back and I must admit a grin crosses my face when he realises his mistake and has a chuckle about it all.

If you also haven’t caught up yet, 3MTR, 2GB’s melbourne talk station has launched, and not without some teething troubles it would seem. I must say I’m not quite used to hearing Chris Smith’s show set up for network and at the end time for Sydney listeners only hearing the theme play out. Still, it’s probably just that, needing to get used to it. I’ve been reading on various forums lately though that some are having trouble hearing it in various parts down there, presumably there’s a transmitter problem they’ve gotta fix or when it was 3MP they didn’t have enough power to begin with. Or the tower’s facing a certain way when it should be facing another. Who knows. Checking out 3MP’s tx site on google earth (and I don’t know if it’s the same set up now) it does seem like it could do with a little improving – am I wrong in saying 3MP and the defunct rock of melbourne 3XY shared a transmitter site? (shared in this instance meaning the same block of land rather than two stations on the same tower, ala 2SM and 2UE up here).

Whatever the case may be I wish MTR all the best, it’s a decent line-up but I wonder how long melbourne will put up with Sydney-only issues.

    G’day WordPressers,

Some of you may have caught my post earlier about my contributions to the 2UW facebook group being deleted.

Fortunately this isn’t the case – the various AV related postings on that group have been moved off to the sidebar. The postings and associated comments are all still there thankfully. So no, it’s not someone harbouring a grudge against me or this site and for that I’m thankful.

Unfortunately every 2UW and Top Spots piece of audio was removed from the Zanyspace server after learning of the news. So that’s gone. But it’s so close to reset time anyway so hope you managed to get what you wanted.

Both these sections are now active again on this site but nothing’s in them yet because of what transpired. Check back after the reset for stuff from these two.

    It’s reset time!

    G’day folks,

Almost time for our next reset so grab anything you haven’t downloaded yet as it’ll all be going on Monday April 26th at 10.00pm AEST.

If you’re not aware of what a reset is or what it does, basically because of the limited space we have currently on the server, we usually delete older material which frees up space for newer material. Stuff continues to be uploaded each update until the server space gets full or nearly full, then a reset takes place which clears the server for newer material and so on. Usually I post a message a few days before the reset so you’re not caught short if you’ve been meaning to download what you need but haven’t got around to it.

I get questions as to why I don’t resume my Youtube channel. Well there’s a reason for that – it seems lately there’s just too many aussie TV history channels on there that are sadly getting shut down for copyright issues. I would hate to put so much work into it and then find it’s zapped. (yes, believe it or not, even for 30 or 40 year old material). Coupled with lots of doubling up between users and some of my stuff not even coming close to what others have, I wouldn’t generate enough interest to keep it going – at least I don’t think so anyway. It doesn’t seem to matter much when I look at it as a few of you download the videos and re-upload them to Youtube, complete with watermark, but also crediting where you got the clips from – which I really appreciate. A simple credit makes it all worthwhile.

…and so remains this site where you can cruise on in and check out all the various goodies on offer. This’ll be here for the foreseeable future.

    Gudday WordPressers,

Well hasn’t this here blog grown in the last few weeks eh? Quite a few sections up now – hopefully I ain’t losing you in the shuffle!

One of many sites I frequent regularly is Wireless Fodder. Run by Matt, the blog now features reviews more than anything else and if you’re a regular reader you would’ve noticed, but reading through his latest missives today I came across a post that I thought I should point you towards!

If you’re in another part of the world, we have an all night music video show down here our government-funded ABC-TV runs by the name of Rage. It goes to air on friday and saturday nights, with friday nights being devoted to hits and new releases, while saturday nights are devoted to guest programmers and Countdown episodes during January of each year.

Matt has written a post that I think should get Creativity Of The Year award. His “voice drops” in particular are very well thought out and I found a couple just plain hilarious! The stories behind some of his choices are really interesting but they also have a humourous side to them.

Rage, take note, you’ve gotta see what you can do about getting him to do that guest programming – it’d be awesome to see it in video form. Maybe he can weld it all together in podcast form in the meantime? Yeah I know, the issue is copyrighted musical works but maybe someone can sing 5 seconds of each? ;-)

Check it out anyway – aforementioned post is here – tell him Frankster sent you!

OK, so over the weekend we learned Geoff Field, newsreader for 2DAY-FM Sydney’s Kyle & Jackie O Show had decided to pack it in. Fair enough. But depending on who you read, we now have two conflicting stories.

Over here we have The Daily Telegraph, claiming Geoff has gone to Nova 96.9.

Over here we have the radio industry site, Radioinfo, claiming Geoff is now with the Hamish ‘n’ Andy team.

    Confused? Yup, so am I…

    G’day WordPressers,

Would be interested if anyone in Sydney, or indeed in Australia who currently still has Foxtel IQ1, is having the exact same issues as I am the last few days. Just curious if it’s just my box failing or if it’s a problem right through the network.

    Problem 1

Programs set for a 3.30 am recording time continually fail with an Error Code 40. Googled and came up with the fact that Fox may be doing early morning upgrades/updates. OK cool. But this has happened 3 nights now.

    Problem 2

Program set for 7.30 pm recording time this evening brought up a “Clashed” error on the IQ’s planner. No other programs were set to record at 7.30pm. Only could come to one guess and that’s the fact the live pause/instant rewind feature is switched on still – but even so, that and the 7.30pm recording would make 2 programs which IQ can or is supposed to do.

Problem 2 in particular is the most bizarre thing I’ve seen happen on the IQ. How can it possibly clash when it’s the only program being recorded at that time? Nuts.

Well, put simply, this area is where I can put my original scans and vidcaps of celebs! Felt inspired to give it a go and shortly I’ll put a few up. Watch this space!

**…and it looks like everything in each section is also being replicated on the main page. Okay. If that’s how it works then fine but for fine-tuned control for each, instead of doing the long scroll, just click on the sections above and you’ll be instantly transported to ‘em!**

**All audio available from 7.00pm AEST Wednesday April 7th 2010

Yup, kind of a new section for the blog for us but finally I can keep the regular AV updates and the 2UW audio seperate from each other. So here we are! Enjoy!

So how did I get access to some of 2UW’s master reels? Well the answer is simple. I was audio guy for my local community radio station and in 2003, they were due to celebrate their 20th birthday. I went looking for any old audio that still may have been in existence as I was compiling a couple of specials for broadcast. The tape library didn’t reveal much, but a few days later I got wind of a storage area they had that was gonna be closed down to save costs. I thought to myself maybe the old stuff is down there. So on a saturday morning, I went down there with our technical co-ordinator and found what I was looking for – but not only that. Peeking behind a shelf were an absolute stack of 7-inch 1/4″ reels. I picked up a couple up being curious as to how we inherited such a large stack of audio tape – and found 2UW markings on the boxes! I’d heard some horror stories about historical audio and video being literally chucked out and I thought 2UW stuff is just too important to let them chuck it all, so I took every single one home, cleaned them all up and transferred the entire lot to CD. It took about a year to go through it all as every tape was on that horrendous batch of Ampex mastering tape (albeit a few on Scotch 177) and each one had to be baked so that it could be played. But at the end of 2003, there I was with fresh transfers of what was on the tapes, and after a few attempts I can now present the contents of them to you! You will be hearing the audio as it sounds on the original tapes. That also means if something was recorded only on one channel, that’s how you’ll hear it – redoing and remixing to correct the faults would only be rewriting history and I want the audio to be a replica of how it sounds on the tapes – so this is how you’re getting them here. Recording dates were usually supplied on the tape log sheets in the boxes but some had no log sheets and a bit of guesswork is involved. If you know when certain audio pieces you see up here were recorded, drop us a line so the information can be updated.

Copyright to this material presumably now remains with Mix 106.5 and the Australian Radio Network as when these tapes were made they were 2UW and owned by CBC, but no claim has been made for these audio pieces and it’s a bit up in the air as to their ownership. Therefore this material is being made available for listening/entertainment purposes only. Then again we’re talking the same people who when 2WS went to FM and got taken over by ARN ended up trashing lots of stuff – proof in the pudding being when I put up the 2WS AM to FM 1993 changeover audio aircheck I had and was asked through an intermediary if I could supply ARN with a dub of it…

    G’day WordPressers,

Thanks to Trev who left a comment about his technology show on 2GB – it seems its staying and both him and Ross Greenwood are a double act from this thursday! So if you’re into technology like I am, check it out 7pm thursdays, or trundle along to the 2GB site and listen to it through there or grab the podcast.

I’ve got to credit some wonderful people for the following news though too – Danny J Palmer, Tim Stackpool, Martin Lester and Alan Waddell

Further to last night’s post about NITV closing up on June 30th 2010, it seems ALL 4x series channels on digital TV are being given the heave-ho by the federal government. It was a trial service which will now be canned, and that entire spectrum cleared for community TV stations and the like. So you’ll have to do a rescan on your digiboxes shortly folks to pick up all the changes. Apparently NITV is also disappearing from C1 Aurora so there you go.

EXPO channel is one of those affected, Tim being the voiceover guy for that channel, however it will continue on Foxtel so his VO job is safe for now. That will also mean Parliament on 47 and 48 will disappearĀ - either a move by them to stop us watching and seeing what’s being discussed, or cleared because A-PAC on Foxtel 607 is doing the same thing with better quality vision and sound.

On top of this, 3MTR, Melbourne’s new talk station will be launching on April 19th at 6.00am (thanks to 2GB’s Ray Hadley program for this info broadcast this morning), and it now is official – the prodigal son will be returning to 2GB overnights! (Jim Ball). Some of 2GB’s talk programs are also being networked into Melbourne – I’m not sure how state issues for Sydney would go down in Melbourne but its an interesting move anyway.

    G’day folks,

The planned server reset for yesterday morning didn’t quite take place as I got hit with a bout of the flu, effectively ruining my easter. The stuff is still there if you want it for a few more days.

    Media Bits ‘n’ Pieces

So, what’s with 2GB’s Chris Smith “cryptic” message he left us with as to why he won’t be on air tomorrow? Luke Bona will be taking his place. Apparently Chris said he can’t mention too much. Will be interesting if anything comes out of that bunker in the next couple of days. It’s probably all very innocent but there’s been lots of chopping and changing of the program line-up there recently. I just hope some dillweed doesn’t see fit to give Jason Morrison the arse, and I know I sound like a fanboi but Jason really does a great program and is a really down to earth guy – so it would be a bummer if he were to lose drive.

2GB’s Ross Greenwood now has a 2 hour show which runs from 6pm to 8pm, which (a) removes Glenn Wheeler/Warren Moore who used to do 7 to 8pm, and (b) will also remove Trevor Long’s technology show which goes to air at 7pm on thursday nights – if this 2 hour change is permanent. If it is, Trevor now no longer has a show, and while we’re on axing’s, David Oldfield has recently got the heave-ho from his midnight to dawn shift. About the same time, Jim Ball, who was hosting 2UE’s midnight to dawn shift had abruptly resigned. Currently doing 2UE’s overnight program is Mike Jeffries, a permanent gig – I used to listen to Mike years ago on 2GB drive! Welcome home Mike.

Has Jim Ball or will he return to 2GB overnights? It’s currently been done by Mike Williams. At least he was last week.

Interesting turn of events in broadcast radio? You bet!

While we’re at it, it would seem we have our second digital TV casualty in as many months. First Channel 45 where traffic cams and the like were broadcast went into scrap. Now it seems NITV (National Indigenous TV) on channel 40 will next be thrown into scrap – the message on their website reads that apparently according to no support from the government, NITV will be forced to close its doors at midnight on June 30th. As such they’ve started a “Save NITV” initiative. While I don’t watch it much this does NOT prosper well for the growth of digital television – if they do shut down, that will be two stations thrown away and still we’re 3 years away from the analogue shutdown. By the time we get to 2013 there’ll be no stations left if this keeps going apart from the majors.

    It’s reset time

    G’day folks,

It’s almost time for the next reset to take place – grab anything you can before 12.01am Monday April 5th 2010 before it disappears.
