As you know, this blog and associated content is hosted on a server at Zanyspace - the posts themselves like this one are written at blogger.com and published to my blog via FTP. Now, blogger have decided they're gonna stop ftp support and migrate everyone to a custom domain!

Um..I already have one. With FTP support being shut down this is gonna be a major pain in the bum. I may have to dump blogger and start using Wordpress or something. But last time I tried to set it up I made a total hash of it.

Here's the notice I received yesterday:

You are receiving this e-mail because one or more of your blogs at Blogger.com are set up to publish via FTP. We recently announced a planned shut-down of FTP support on Blogger Buzz (the official Blogger blog), and wanted to make sure you saw the announcement. We will be following up with more information via e-mail in the weeks ahead, and regularly updating a blog dedicated to this service shut-down here: http://blogger-ftp.blogspot.com/.

Last May, we discussed a number of challenges facing[1] Blogger users who relied on FTP to publish their blogs. FTP remains a significant drain on our ability to improve Blogger: only .5% of active blogs are published via FTP — yet the percentage of our engineering resources devoted to supporting FTP vastly exceeds that. On top of this, critical infrastructure that our FTP support relies on at Google will soon become unavailable, which would require that we completely rewrite the code that handles our FTP processing.

Three years ago we launched Custom Domains[2] to give users the simplicity of Blogger, the scalability of Google hosting, and the flexibility of hosting your blog at your own URL. Last year's post discussed the advantages of custom domains over FTP[3] and addressed a number of reasons users have continued to use FTP publishing. (If you're interested in reading more about Custom Domains, our Help Center has a good overview[4] of how to use them on your blog.) In evaluating the investment needed to continue supporting FTP, we have decided that we could not justify diverting further engineering resources away from building new features for all users.

For that reason, we are announcing today that we will no longer support FTP publishing in Blogger after March 26, 2010. We realize that this will not necessarily be welcome news for some users, and we are committed to making the transition as seamless as possible. To that end:

We are building a migration tool that will walk users through a migration from their current URL to a Blogger-managed URL (either a Custom Domain or a Blogspot URL) that will be available to all users the week of February 22. This tool will handle redirecting traffic from the old URL to the new URL, and will handle the vast majority of situations.
We will be providing a dedicated blog[5] and help documentation
Blogger team members will also be available to answer questions on the forum, comments on the blog, and in a few scheduled conference calls once the tool is released.

We have a number of big releases planned in 2010. While we recognize that this decision will frustrate some users, we look forward to showing you the many great things on the way. Thanks for using Blogger.

You bet it's frustrating. Why fix something that isn't broken? Grr....

I wanna ~~quick~~ give a quick hoy to the gang at 2GB Sydney for putting together a really awesome broadcast today for Australia Day! These guys have done SO well today with it all and should be commended. Well done you guys, absolutely sensational!

Unfortunately this wonderful day is now marred by a few callers and 2GB's own Glenn Wheeler stating there's various groups in Cronulla being their usual selves, with these same callers stating they would not be surprised if we get a Cronulla Riot 2 tonight. I really hope not.

Anyway I digress - Alan Jones, Ray Hadley, Andrew Moore, Jason Morrison and associated behind the scenes folk, producers, techs and others, hold your heads high and be proud of yourselves for what you accomplished today. In a word - brilliant!

2GB's Luke Bona possibly fed up/hates "How green was my cactus"?

G'day bloggers,

A regular segment that appears on 2GB and has been on air there for a few months now is the return of "How green was my cactus". This series used to be on 2DAY-FM Sydney as far back as the early 1990's. Loved it then, and I love it now.

Such a shame 2GB's Luke Bona, in which this segment is played on his shift anywhere between 2.40pm and 3.00pm weekdays, either doesn't like it or is fed up with it - and I must say I'm getting a little bit sick and tired of him indicating his displeasure with it almost daily.

Day 1 at the conclusion of Cactus: "Oooooooookayyyyy..."
Day 2: "Oh is that it?...(gap)...that's all? (gap)...Oh good"
Day 3: "I didn't get any of that! *sighs* Okay..."

..and so it goes on. Repeated attempts on air as I say indicating his displeasure of it are really starting to piss me off. Luke, just shut up and play the damn segment. I don't wanna hear how much you hate it, nor do I wanna hear your displeasure about the bloody thing. Fair dinkum. You're really starting to get on my nerves.

It really is not about what the listener wants or likes anymore is it folks.

Welcome to our latest video update! Answering an email by Greg who said he visits frequently and enjoys the site (many thanks Greg!) but wonders why the clips are mp4 format.

Greg, they're done in this format as I not only wanted ipod video owners to be able to download and play these clips on the move, but for cross-compatibility between Windows and Mac as well as any other systems able to play mp4 files. It would be quite limiting if I encoded the clips in only a form that Windows could decode.

Lame joke just crossed the triple m sydney airwaves

Who's the announcer on triple m sydney at 11.20 am doing lame jokes? Commenting on Peter Garrett's appearance in 'pirates of the carribean', it was mentioned he'd be a buccaneer. Which caused said announcer to blurt out:

"...what a buckin' thing to do!"

Laugh? I nearly shat. Haw haw haw...how incredibly lame. Ratings 2% eh? Case closed...

Quick g'day! Hope you all had a nice Christmas. Since I last wrote I've been in hospital twice - had very severe stomach pains. It's 10 days later now and bar a short hiccup on Christmas Day I've been fine ever since. Whatever it was I hope has been banished into oblivion for good.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Newcastle earthquake - yep, and even back then I was doing audio stuff and managed to catch a few minutes of the 2GB newsbreak and the program going to air at the time. Will have it up here by the end of the day.

On a slightly different note, I need to get a gripe off my chest.

Sometimes I need a lift someplace, and for the most part, someone I live with has been able to get me where I need to go. But today I'm stumped.

My sister never drives anywhere outside of her immediate area - which means if I have to go to places like Auburn or Guildford, I have to catch a train or two. Likewise for something as simple as Homebush (I'm in Five Dock myself). So how is it then, that my neighbour has claimed all rights to transport whenever the hell she feels like it, and suddenly my sister is no stranger to a place like Auburn when my neighbour needs to go there?? I don't get it! And it sucks the big one. Never mind I often do up DVD's or CD's for her or whatever. No. All my neighbour has to do is snap her fingers, and my sister will go running no matter whereabouts in bloody Sydney she has to go to.

That's alright, I'll just stop giving her a hand with CD's or DVD's for the time being. Stuff it! Why am I killing myself doing this crap when the places I need to go have to be on a train but these same places my neighbour wants to go to it's no problem? What rot!

**It's also a little known fact that I love to make my own mashups/re-edits/remixes of songs. Sometimes I'll add a new rhythm track, other times I'll completely change the structure of the song, and other times I'll extend a track to sometimes more than double its original length. I very rarely put my mixes online but I can't resist putting this one up.

This is a VERY rough demo of a new rhythm track over the 12" extended mix of Huey Lewis's "Heart and soul". The rhythm came from a DJ mix of Culture Club's "Miss me blind". Bit screwy in places and it goes off time a little, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. As I say it's a very rough demo and far from polished, but take a listen!

Well if you're wondering where the hell I've been - don't. Things just got very busy in the house of Frankster.

The last couple of days has seen me do a course and it was probably the most rewarding I've ever done in my life, short of the radio stuff I did with AFTRS and TAFE in the last couple of years. My trainer was fantastic, down-to-earth and all, and the people I met were fantastic as well. One guy landed himself a new job which was great news and of course we all wished him well. It's great to see.

So where's a new AV update hmmm? It's coming (I know, I know, so is Christmas) but hang in there, it'll probably be up by friday.

Congratulations also to 2GB for another ratings win - well done guys - and commiserations to Triple M..2.2 and 2.0% are some of the figures from the results released on tuesday. Hope things change for them next year.

As previously mentioned this site will be expanding next year so server resets should happen less frequently, giving you guys more time to download all the goodies! If you're new to the place, you might be wondering why there's a watermark on the vids - well, put simply, some have seen fit recently to download the content, and re-upload it all to sites like Youtube without any credit or acknowledgement. If you wanna do this then by all means, just credit the source when you do it. It'll only take a few seconds, and I promise you your face won't crack ;-)

**Ah the good ol' days of 1224 2WS when they were based at Leabons Lane in Seven Hills, Sydney, with their transmitter at Prospect. Fast forward nearly 30 years and now they're one of ARN's stations with an FM transmitter, 1224 AM now in use by 2RPH. Gee I wish I could find that TV show which had a 2WS announcer on it getting frazzled at the fact someone did something to the carts he had to play - not really a prob if they just played commercials off them but 2WS as well as 2UW and others all used carts for their music AND their ads. Happy 31st birthday 2WS!

This cut is a wild take featuring people having a conversation. It was meant to be used as background chatter for a doctor's surgery style radio commercial and being isolated, if you listen carefully it's pretty funny to imagine if some of these bits really did make it. The people chatting would be mixed quite low and under a bed and more vocals so it wouldn't have been noticeable but I really wonder what was left out and what was actually used in the final mix.

It's only been a few minutes now but Ian Ross has just completed his final news bulletin. A brilliant retrospective on his career before the conclusion was put to air, and as the bulletin drew to a close, he fought back tears but it was lovely to see Chris Bath and others surrounding him, wishing him well. I pretty much grew up with Roscoe, I remember him on 9 news in the 80's!

I'm sure I had some 80's Ian Ross stuff but the database I've made doesn't seem to turn up anything. It's possible I archived 'em but never catalogued 'em. Watch this space!

The headphones saga continues....

...but in a good way. Bought a new set yesterday but didn't go for Sony this time. Went for a nice pair of sennies! (Sennheiser) - the HD 205's. Sound pretty cool, initially I thought a bit bassy but that was just in the source. Hooray! Now how long will these last? If it's shorter than the Sony's I'll scream...

Earlier this week I wrote about myself obtaining a Sony 1" VTR - found the power connector is loose off its base. Even though it powers up I won't risk doing a transfer on it yet in case a fault manages to go all the way to the mains box.

Well, it's here - just got a delivery of a Sony 1" VTR. The BVH-1100. Weighty bastard too, 100kg's plus. Still, it powers up and all, it just doesn't have a takeup spool.

Relax, I'm not dead, I know it's been a few days between posts, but I've been preparing some awesome audio stuff for ya's for next year.

I'm absolutely amazed. Never would I have imagined DAT tapes that are nearly 17 years old still play fine without errors. Which is terrific because I have a lot of my 2RDJ-produced material on them and just got around to transferring them in the last couple of days - and I'll be presenting them next year on the blog. Some of the stuff is awesome but some of it is "huh? What was I thinking?". Anyway, the tapes survived (thankfully as some dillweed had only rolled ONE deck, ensuring there was never a safety master of any of these tapes - the transferred stuff were the absolute final mix tapes..*the* masters..). Tell you what, either they were stored fine or the Tascam DA-20 series of decks handle the tape really gently.

Can anyone say hot? Oh boy. We are sweltering in Sydney right now. Hang onto your hats as the temp climbs to 40 to 41 degrees tomorrow.

Oh and a gripe with Sony - you have cans (headphones) that break easily. I have TWO pairs, each a different model. State of play is this:

Exhibit A: V100 series - no sound in the right channel. Sussed it out, no disconnected wires on that side. Cable break. Undo cable to patch it up. Find cable has white insulation around it stopping flow of signals. Try and strip this away without a soldering iron and you totally screw up the good wiring. Grrrr...

Exhibit B: V250V series - plastic headband that breaks easily. Wanting to source another V250V headband as the cans work fine without cable problems anywhere. Be a bugger to chuck 'em as they work fine. Break is just above the left earpiece where it's on a swivel base - portion where it suspends has broken off leaving left side in collapsed state and feeling very uncomfortable when worn.

Exhibit C: Borrowed sister's cordless cans - not bad, but stupid thing can't handle a decent signal level. It ducks, and it ducks often. Sometimes it's so bad it sounds like an audio compression box has had it's gating circuit up too high. Triple grrr...try doing mastering with this piece of crap. OK for listening but nothing else.

Still, it's not all bad tonight I guess - I had the most wonderous packet of Salt 'n' Vinegar chips in the last hour and about to get onto a very cold glass of Milo. Yum!
