2UE Sydney: The Best Of The John Laws Morning Show theme
Dur: 0’56”, 128 kbps 44 kHz Stereo, 916 KB

I’m not sure who it was who gave me a dub of this one recently, but thankyou whoever you are! The theme to 2UE’s “The Best Of The John Laws Morning Show”.

3XY Nostradamus special: 1978
Original format: 2x 7.5 IPS quarter-inch audio reels

Following on from last week where I presented the 2SM Nostradamus special, this version was last on air at Radio 3XY Melbourne in 1978 and hasn’t either been repeated or put to air in any form since. 3XY Nostradamus II which came on two 1/4″ reels, 7.5 IPS. The condition of both of these were slightly better than the 2SM reels, but of course it was all recorded on that lousy batch of Ampex mastering tape and some due care was needed before I could even start the transfers.

Top Spots Agency Master #21
Tape: Ampex 456 1/4″ stereo 7.5/15 IPS master reel, DBX encoding
Production dates: November 1983
192 kbps 44 kHz Stereo
This tape was recorded with DBX noise reduction processing but transferred without a suitable DBX decoder and therefore these cuts may appear to sound a little thin. I’m hoping to take all these back into transfers and re-do them once I get a DBX decoder or something very near enough. The tape ID’s you hear throughout are voiced by Brian Newington.

2SM Nostradamus special: 1977
Original format: 2x 7.5 IPS quarter-inch audio reels

This special was last on air at Radio 2SM Sydney in 1977 and hasn’t either been repeated or put to air in any form since. 2SM Nostradamus I which came on two 1/4″ reels, 7.5 IPS. Unfortunately near the end of reel 1 during the Bryan Ferry track, it seems that someone’s already had a go in dubbing it to digital or elsewhere without taking it through the proper tape restoration methods, which has resulted in the tape literally being stripped away in the process! You’ll hear it as a once-per-revolution drop in the right channel before the reel ends. It’s only affected reel 1 thankfully, but still a bugger.

There is also a 3XY Nostradamus in existence and I’ll be putting that up in coming updates. For now, enjoy 2SM’s version!
