2DAY-FM Sydney does it again

G'day bloggers,

Well, this story this morning which got a run on the Ray Hadley Morning Show on 2GB I must admit has left me amazed.

2DAY goad sex questions from 14 year old rape victim

This first appeared on their Livenews site and then it made it on air. The story is that the Kyle 'n' Jackie O brekky show have a segment called Lie Detector and this morning had a mother and her 14 year old daughter on there. According to livenews, the mother had some concerns after her daughter was dropped off home by undercover police officers.

The producers, crew and everyone else associated with the show claim to not have known about what was about to transpire on air, and fair enough, they might not have. But I do know it may have left everyone involved gobsmacked if not concerned and/or upset for the girl. So what happened? The segment only got to the second question before the segment was terminated by Jackie O - the question was from the mother to the daughter, "have you had sex?", to which the daughter replied:

"I was raped when I was twelve years old!"

Deafening silence all around after that, then:

Kyle: "Right...is that the only experience you've had?"
Jackie: "I think we should abort this segment"

2DAY and other Austereo stations have done some stupid stuff lately which has sometimes left me shaking my head in disbelief wondering how they got away from them, and other times leaving me laughing my absolute bloody head off, such as their recent descriptions of Nate Myles and their descriptions of what he did. But I'm afraid this has crossed the line. Big time.

What gets me is these stations have a delay system which they use for their callers in case anything's said that shouldn't go to air - this ranges from 7 to 10 seconds but apparently some can be variable up to 20. It's probably time they ran segments like that via delay. It could save a lot of hassle.

Now the word is they'll get some kind of reprimand from ACMA, which was once known as the toothless tiger in the industry. What will they be doing I wonder. Fine the station? That won't hurt them a bit. Suspend the broadcasting licence? Not likely. The fact also that the mother put her daughter in that situation is also a factor that needs to be considered.

2DAY will be releasing a media statement "soon". Watch this space.
